Book 3

My third book is released! Learn what you'll need to know in order to become an embedded engineer.

Book 2

Check out my second book; learn practical stuff about building robots and control systems around Linux PCs and the Atmel AVR.

Book 1

My first book gives you all the intro you need on developing 32-bit embedded systems on a hobbyist budget.

So, You Want To Be an Embedded Engineer.

If you've reached this page, then you're probably contemplating a career in embedded engineering. If you're unsure what this involves, or simply curious about this exciting and profitable career path, then my third book is for you!

I wrote this book in response to literally hundreds of queries I've seen posted online from engineering students, non-engineering students who are considering a change of major, technicians who are looking for career advancement possibilities, and IT workers who are trying to diversify their skills. There are several questions that people often ask, such as:

  • What microcontrollers should I learn about if I want to become a successful embedded engineer?
  • Do I need to learn assembly language to be an effective embedded engineer?
  • What general skills are necessary to be a successful embedded engineer?
  • Can I become an embedded engineer without an engineering degree? How about with no college degree at all? (The short answer to both of these is yes, by the way)
  • What strategies can I use to land a good job in engineering?
  • So, what's the deal with outsourcing and work visas? Are there really no jobs left in the West for natural-born citizens?
  • What's it really like, on a day-to-day basis, to work in engineering?
  • What's the difference between working as a consultant vs. working in a small company vs. working in a large company? What are the upsides and downsides of each path?

None of these questions can be answered adequately in a paragraph or two on Usenet, so I sat down and summarized some of my experience in a highly readable, humor-sprinkled volume.

(You might take a moment just now to read this review of my book from Electronic Design).

I also recently wrote an article for IBM's developerWorks that references material in this book; click here to read that article. To see my other publications, visit the zws.com publications page.

The experience I put into this book is hard to match: Born an Australian citizen, I have been working in engineering since 1993; initially in cryptosystems, later electronic toys, multimedia appliances, and currently in wireless security/fire safety devices. I successfully went through the process of becoming an H-1B hi-tech worker in the United States and lived that way for several years. I have worked for two Fortune 50 companies and several small companies, on both sides of the software vs. hardware divide.

If you have any questions about this book, feel free to email me. (I suggest you browse the sample pages at amazon.com using the link below, also). While you're there, check out my other books!
