Abstract

LectraRef is a database of chip and connector pinouts for Newton devices. Particularly when servicing appliances, it is frequently very handy to have a simple pinout guide on hand. Although most semiconductor manufacturers now supply their databooks on CD-ROM, it is inconvenient to carry a notebook into all field situations - in addition, a full-sized notebook is a cumbersome, expensive and delicate tool which may be exposed to unnecessary risk of damage. Until recently, I used to carry all this information on paper, in PDF files, heavy books, crumpled, faded faxes and all the other miscellaneous ways we receive these sorts of data. Since buying my first (and second, and third) Newton device [I own an MP2100 and an MP120, and bought my mom another MP120], I now have a MessagePad 120 which seems to be the ideal inexpensive pocket companion, with enough RAM to hold hordes of pinouts - so why struggle along with assorted papers a moment longer?

LectraRef contains pinouts on chips which range from dirt-common (74 series logic) to amazingly rare (CBM VIC multifunction ASIC). This collection may indicate to you that I deal with a lot of old devices. That's true - I collect arcade games (see my arcade game site) and also ancient computers, of which I have over 120. Repairing these beasts requires a lot of specialized information.

Please check back frequently. This is a vast project, which I am working on in all the moments which I can persuade my clients are absolutely necessary for my physical survival. I anticipate at least weekly updates, particularly in the early days.
